While there’s no doubt about the cultural significance of the Super Bowl, for cinephiles the big game means new trailers. For years, studios have used the eyes and attention of a rapt audience to unveil their latest previews, putting months-long hype trains in motion and setting the stage for the year to come. This year gave us an exciting crop of movies to look forward to in the months to come with everything from the Minions to James Bond making their debut. In case you somehow missed it, here’s all the movie trailers which debuted in last night’s big game.

A Quiet Place Part II

At least we know that writer/director John Krasinski found a way to ensure that his dead character from the first movie could appear on screen once more.

Black Widow

Actually, I guess there was kind of a theme of dead characters coming back for new movies this year. As late as this movie is getting to the table, I must admit that it’s looking like the most fun MCU movie to hit in a good long while. After the back to back hit of melodrama that was Infinity War and Endgame, it’ll be good to maybe get back to Marvel basics.

Fast & Furious 9

The most exciting part of about Fast & Furious 9 trailer isn’t the return of Han but, rather, the implicit knowledge that we are one step closer to Fast 10 and all of the “Fast10 year seatbelts” marketing campaigns that this series has be dying for.

Minions: The Rise of Gru

Your mom’s favorite meme is back!

Mulan

This honestly is looking more and more like Disney will have an actual classic on their hands for the first time since they began their live action remake series. Time will tell, of course, but each new trailer looks better than the last.

No Time to Die

Daniel Craig’s last outing as the debonair spy has been long awaited, and while the new trailer didn’t show us much it certainly does a good job at piquing interest in Craig’s swan song.

Sonic the Hedgehog

This doesn’t really do much in terms of getting me excited for the movie but, I must admit, it was kind of a cute concept for a Super Bowl trailer.

The Invisible Man

It’s good to know that Universal is finally doing something worthwhile with their Classic Monsters.

The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run

Snoop Dogg? Keanu? CG animation? What in tarnation?

Top Gun: Maverick

Whether or not we actually needed a sequel to Top Gun is certainly a discussion worth having. But it’s certainly getting harder to deny that Top Gun: Maverick at least looks like it might be cool. That’s something, right?

20 Films To Look Forward To In 2020: The Gentlemen, Downhill, Mulan & More https://glidemagazine.com/237985/20-films-in-2020/ https://glidemagazine.com/237985/20-films-in-2020/#comments Tue, 07 Jan 2020 13:00:36 +0000 2020 looks like another great year for movie lovers.

The Gentlemen (January 24)

Guy Ritchie returns to his gangster roots in this stylish drama starring Matthew McConaughey, Colin Farrell, and Hugh Grant. Early buzz on this has been wildly positive and could be a January surprise for lovers of fun cinema.

Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) (February 7)

Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn was the only decent part of 2016’s Suicide Squad, and maybe with a script that wasn’t rushed to completion in just six weeks in order to meet an arbitrarily decided release date the character will be able to actually shine. This time she contends with her breakup with Joker and is joined by several of Gotham City’s most notorious female anti-heroes. February isn’t usually known for its high powered blockbuster releases but Deadpool’s success has shown us that expectation doesn’t always match reality. Add to the mix director Cathy Yan (Dead Pigs) and we just might have a recipe for a mid-winter surprise.

Downhill (February 14)

This remake of the absolutely stunning Force Majeure feels remarkably unnecessary but the writing and directing team of Nat Faxon and Jim Rash (The Descendants, The Way Way Back) does lend some intrigue to the project. While there’s almost no way it can be good as Ruben Ostland’s original film, the onscreen duo of Will Ferrell and Julia Louis-Dreyfus perhaps bodes equally well for this remake. The film follows a couple’s attempts to reevaluate their lives following an escape from an avalanche on a ski trip.

The Invisible Man (February 28)

After the disastrous roll out for their planned Dark Universe series following the release of The Mummy, Universal decided to step back and hit upon the absolutely genius idea of using their iconic horror monsters in actual horror movies. Weird, I know. This reboot of The Invisible Man finds Elizabeth Moss starring as a woman whose abusive ex dies until a series of weird coincidences forces her to think, “Maybe he’s not dead?” There’s certainly a lot of room for error here but Moss hasn’t exactly been making poor decisions recently which leads me to believe that there could be some juice to this idea.

A Quiet Place Part II (March 20)

Did we need a sequel to 2017’s near silent monster movie surprise? No. But c’mon.

Mulan (March 27)

Okay, so look. You’re annoyed by Disney live action reboots; I’m annoyed by Disney live action reboots. They’re cash grabs designed to feed the multi-headed beast that the House of Mouse has become as it seeks to sate its insatiable thirst for more billions. I get it. Mulan, however, looks like it has the potential to be the first truly great of their series of unnecessary remakes.

The Lovebirds (April 3)

Kumail Nanjiani reunites with his The Big Sick director Michael Showalter for a romantic comedy about a couple on the verge of calling it quits who find themselves strangely embroiled in a bizarre murder mystery. I gotta be honest here, I was on board for this about halfway through The Big Sick whether I knew it then or not.

Antebellum (April 24)

Janelle Monáe stars in this social horror film from the producers of Get Out. The erstwhile R&B queen stars as a successful author who finds herself trapped in an alternate reality and must find her way out. Little else is known about the film at this time but that first trailer was a skin crawling nightmare.

Black Widow (May 1)

Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow might have died in Endgame (uh…spoiler alert?) but that shouldn’t stop Marvel from giving us the movie they should’ve given us 8 years ago!

The Woman in the Window (May 15)

Joe Wright (The Darkest Hour) directs Amy Adams, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Gary Oldman, and Julianne Moore in this adaptation of the A.J. Finn novel of the same name. Despite its Rear Window-esque plot, which finds an agoraphobic woman (Adams) witnessing an act of violence from the window of her apartment, this long-awaited adaptation bills itself as anything but a remake of the Hitchcock classic. Still, the star power alone gives The Woman in the Window more than enough juice heading into the summer blockbuster seasons.

Wonder Woman 1984 (June 5)

I mean…yeah.

Candyman (June 12)

I think that 1992’s Candyman is probably the film most responsible for my enduring love of horror. This Jordan Peele produced and Nia DaCosta directed “spiritual sequel” to the original film might just be the first in the series to live up to the original’s tone and atmosphere. The legend of the hook-handed killer returns to a now-gentrified Chicago to re-stake his claim on the minds of the citizens.

In the Heights (June 26)

John M. Chu, director of Crazy Rich Asians, returns in this adaptation of the Lin-Manuel Miranda musical. Given the resurgence in popularity for movie musicals and the pedigree In the Heights brings with it, this has the makings of being the runaway hit of the summer.

Tenet (July 17)

Two things crossed my mind while watching the preview for the latest film from Christopher Nolan. 1. I have no idea what’s going on. 2. This looks awesome.

Bill and Ted Face the Music (August 21)

STATION!

The Many Saints of Newark (September 25)

This prequel to The Sopranos focuses on the rise of the Moltisanti family and their connections with the Sopranos in the decades before the series takes place. Michael Gandolfini, son of the late James Galdofini, who played Tony Soprano, stars as a young Tony as his family begins to make a name for itself in the greater mafia community.

Last Night in Soho (September 25)

Edgar Wright returns with a psychological thriller than somehow involves time travel, the fashion industry, the music industry, and 1960s London. Sure.

Death on the Nile (October 9)

Kenneth Branagh returns to the world of Agatha Christie’s Poirot that he first established in 2017’s Murder on the Orient Express. This time he’s bringing along Gal Gadot, Armie Hammer, Annette Bening as Poirot’s vacation is interrupted by a murder most foul. Murder on the Orient Express was an underrated classic that deserves a sequel (and a revisiting). And, if nothing else, Branagh looks like playing Poirot is the time of his life, which is always fun.

Eternals (November 6)

Even with Marvel settling into formula over substance (which hindered their two-part climax of Infinity War and Endgame) it’s difficult not to get at least somewhat excited for what the future has in store. Indie director Chloé Zhao (The Rider) takes the reigns of this cosmic story which lends an intriguing credibility to a story that is, quite frankly, kind of batshit for casual audiences. Add to the mix the likes of Angelina Jolie, Richard Madden, Kumail Nanjiani, Kit Harrington, and Bryan Tyree Henry, and the new era of the MCU might have something special to offer.

Dune (December 18)

Denis Villeneuve has proven himself more than adept at handling massive sci-fi classics with his Blade Runner sequel, Blade Runner 2049. He brings his singular sensibilities to the Frank Herbert classic, Dune, with an all-star cast that includes Timothée Chalamet, Rebecca Ferguson, Oscar Isaac, Josh Brolin, Stellan Skarsgård, Dave Bautista, Zendaya, Jason Momoa and Javier Bardem. While this is said to be the first of at least two films, and also a TV series, it’ll be exciting to see what he can bring to this cornerstone of science fiction-fantasy.

On March 22, Netflix subscribers will finally get the chance to “Shout at the Devil.”

The streaming service is set to premiere the Motley Crüe biopic, The Dirt, based on the biography of the same name written by Crüe themselves (along with Neil Strauss). Director Jeff Tremaine, best known for his work on the Jackass movies, oversees the production that promises to tell the wild, debauched tales that defined glam rock’s most notoriously wild band.

Iwan Rheon (Ramsay Bolton in Game of Thrones), Douglas Booth (Pride and Prejudice and Zombies), rapper Machine Gun Kelly, and Daniel Webber (The Punisher) star as Mick Mars, Nikki Sixx, Tommy Lee, and Vince Neil, respectively, bringing to live the glory days of debauchery and excess that earned Motley Crüe their badboy notoriety. SNL’s Pete Davidson joins the line up as legendary A&R man Tom Zutaut.

Crüe’s antics are legendary in the world of rock and roll, with their party days of sex and drugs setting the standard for rock excess as well as a warning for every band who has come up since. Crüe’s book was a wild tale of decadence matched by few in the industry, with unbelievable stories that shock even the most jaded of rock critics and fans.

That the core four are still alive today is something of a miracle, though they weren’t without their close calls. Sixx was declared legally dead for minutes following an overdose on heroin in 1987.

With so much drama and so many stories to pull from The Dirt stands to be a wild tale that will captivate and enthrall fans of Motley Crüe or rock in general. You don’t have to enjoy the band to be stunned by the antics they go into. The Dirt stands to be a potentially great musical biopic.

The Dirt premieres on Netflix on March 22.

Okay so maybe the 13-3 victory for the New England Patriots was objectively the most boring Super Bowls of all time, and maybe the muddled halftime show was one of the most forgettable in recent history, but at least we had the commercials. For movie fans, it doesn’t matter who’s playing or who wins. The Super Bowl always means a slew of new trailers to enjoy and parse through and this year gave us some good ones. While there was no hint of Star Wars anywhere in the broadcast, we did get some new looks at some upcoming releases. Here we’ve collected all the trailers that aired during last night’s big lame game so you can relive the best moments from this year’s NFL championship.

Glass (January 18)

Split surprised everyone as both a return to form for director M. Night Shyamalan and as a sequel to his best film to date, Unbreakable. Though the sequel reveal had little bearing on the plot of Split, Glass promises to bring together the characters from both movies for an epic superhero showdown.

Captain Marvel (March 8)

Marvel gave us one of 2018’s best films with Black Panther, and more than any other movie on their slate this year—even End GameCaptain Marvel looks like it might continue the trend into 2019. Brie Larson stars as the titular hero in a film set in the 90s and offering us context for that final post-credits scene in Infinity War. The trailers so far have been amazing and it looks as though the film will live up to the hype.

Us (March 15)

Jordan Peele’s follow up to 2017’s Get Out comes with the weight of a lot of expectation, but the first trailer proved that, if anything, we weren’t expecting enough from this burgeoning master.

Where’d You Go, Bernadette? (March 22)

Richard Linklater is a director who seems to oscillate between greatness (Boyhood, the Before Trilogy) and mediocrity (School of Rock) but Where’d You Go, Bernadette? looks as though it might be the surprise hit of the spring. Based on a book by Maria Semple, it follows the adventures a young girl (Emma Nelson) and her father (Billy Crudup) as they look for their mother/wife (Cate Blanchett). The first trailer looks like the film is full of the kind of sweetness and charm that’s perfect for a Spring release.

Shazam! (April 5)

DC’s bound to get it right sometime, right? Right?!

Avengers: Endgame (April 26)

Okay but how are they going to fix it? Who’s coming back from the dead? WHO’S GOING TO DIE THIS TIME?!

John Wick Chapter III (May 17)

Yes, please.

Ad Astra (May 24)

Depending on you who ask, director James Gray’s last work, The Lost City of Z, was either a mesmerizing work of cinematic genius or a masturbatory work of self-indulgence. Either read seems like it might bode well of Ad Astra, which follows a man (Brad Pitt) who travels to Neptune to find his long lost father (Tommy Lee Jones) and uncovering a vast and wide reaching mystery that threatens the prospects for human survival. If nothing else, I’m here for the genius casting of Jones and Pitt as father and son.

Godzilla: King of Monsters (May 31)

Listen, you put some giant monsters in a movie and tell me they’re gonna punch each other, and you’ve got my attention. Put four of them in there and I’m already halfway to loving it. Tell me those four are Godzilla, Mothra, Rodan, and King Ghidorah and, well, I’m ready to crown it Greatest Movie Ever Made.

Grudge (June 21)

Reboots of American remakes of Japanese horror franchises aren’t normally the kinds of movies that catch my attention, but the addition of director Nicolas Pesce, whose debut, The Eyes of My Mother, was a nerve-shattering take on murder-horror, is just intriguing and baffling enough to work. On the surface, I don’t see how this will work but if anyone can pull it off and surprise us at the same time, Pesce can. Here’s hoping?

Once Upon A Time In Hollywood (July 26)

Quentin Tarantino’s ninth, and supposedly penultimate, film chronicles life in 1960’s Hollywood in the lead up and aftermath of Sharon Tate’s murder by Charles Manson’s cult. The auteur has previously claimed that it’s the closest his work has gotten to Pulp Fiction, which certainly bodes well for the film. It also stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Brad Pitt, Margot Robbie, Kurt Russell, and Al Pacino. Marvel be damned, this will be the movie of the summer.

IT: Chapter 2 (September 6)

I’ll admit I wasn’t exactly a fan of the first chapter of this adaptation of a seminal Stephen King work but there’s no denying that Chapter 2 comes with a lot of hope and expectation. Even in my original review I posited that a second outing could retroactively fix a lot of my issues with the first film, which I felt didn’t delve deep enough into the horror of King’s tale (admittedly, I’m an outlier). This outing features adult versions of the Losers Club returning to Derry to face the nightmare they thought they had defeated as children. The problem with IT, ultimately, was that it was incomplete. Rounding out the story and amping up the terror could solve a lot of issues that the first film had.

The Kitchen (September 20)

Based on a comic from DC’s Vertigo line, The Kitchen is a story of three mob wives (Elizabeth Moss, Tiffany Haddish, and Melissa McCarthy) who take over Hell’s Kitchen following the imprisonment of their husbands. The film marks the first drama to be produced by Haddish’s production company and the directorial debut for screenwriter Andrea Berloff (Straight Outta Compton). There’s a lot of power behind this one, which just might make a late-summer/early-fall splash at the box office.

Joker (October 4)

As much as DC hasn’t exactly given us much to hope for over the past few years—and I say that as someone who liked Man of Steel and Dawn of Justice—there’s more than enough room for intrigue this time around. Todd Phillips directs Joaquin Phoenix in a Martin Scorsese inspired take on the origin of the Clown Prince of Crime. This could go either way, but the intrigue alone is worth looking forward to. And also like…DC IS BOUND TO GET IT RIGHT AT SOME POINT, RIGHT?!

A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood (October 18)

Tom Hanks plays Mr. Rogers in a film from Marielle Heller, the director of Diary of a Teenage Girl and Can You Ever Forgive Me?. The potential is astounding.

Knives Out (November 27)

I’m not sure how director Rian Johnson is going to top his last movie, The Last Jedi, the greatest Star Wars movie since The Empire Strikes Back, but a return to his noir roots is definitely a good start. Billed as a kind of Agatha Christie story for the modern day, this certainly gives the filmmaker a chance to flex his auteur sensibilities that made Brick such a delight.

Star Wars Episode IX (December 20)

I’m not sure how they’re going to top The Last Jedi, the greatest Star Wars movie since The Empire Strikes Back, but bringing back J.J. Abrams to finish off the trilogy he started is definitely a good start. We know nothing yet about this final entry into the sequel trilogy—so far, not even a title has been revealed—but rest assured that the hype train is mounting and that all eyes will be on the stars (and their associated wars) throughout the year.

Little Women (December 25)

Did we need another adaptation of Louisa May Alcott’s classic novel? Absolutely not. Did we need another movie written and directed by Greta Gerwig following the massive success of Lady Bird? Absolutely yes. This is a bizarre choice for her to make as a filmmaker, but it does reunite her with Saoirse Ronan and Timothee Chalamet, who co-starred in her debut, and brings hot names like Emma Watson, Florence Pugh, Meryl Streep, and Laura Dern into her fold. All the ingredients are there to make this a new quintessential version of the timeless story.

The Irishman (TBA)

Netflix is vying hard to be taken seriously as A Real Studio & Distributor, and landing the latest film from Scorsese certainly helps their case. The film also marks Joe Pesci’s first live action film appearance in almost a decade, reuniting him with his Casino and Goodfellas costar Robert De Niro in addition to reuniting De Niro with his Godfather II and Heat costar, Al Pacino. So, to recap, we’ve got Scorsese, Pesci, De Niro, and Pacino. K. Netflix might pull this off, yet.

Jojo Rabbit (TBA)

Taika Waititi has made some bold and strange choices over the course of his career but this might be his strangest. In his latest film, based on a novel by Christine Leunens, Waititi costars as a young child’s (Roman Griffin Davis) imaginary friend and idol, Adolf Hitler. Though the child has some, um, bad ideas about race and nation, his beliefs are challenged when he discovers his mother (Scarlett Johansson) is herself sheltering a young Jewish girl (Thomasin McKenzie) from her son’s idol’s evil.

Five Fingers for Marseilles is a gritty, emotional, and beautifully shot Western that just released a red band trailer to wet your appetites ahead of its theatrical release on September 7th. The film, from director Michael Matthews and screenwriter Sean Drummond, is a brutal look at life in post-Apartheid South Africa.

While a town is ruled over by shady officials, one man, who’d been exiled years before, returns to Marseilles in search of redemption, but will test the limits of loyalty from his former brothers and friends, a rebel faction once known as the Five Fingers.

The original synopsis reads as follows:

The residents of the colonial town of Marseilles are under the thumb of police oppression and only the young rebels known as the Five Fingers are willing to stand up to them. Their battle is just, until Tau kills two policemen and flees the scene. The remaining rebels disband while the banished Tau resorts to a life of crime. Twenty years later, now known as feared outlaw The Lion of Marseilles, he is released from prison. He returns home, desiring only peace and to reconnect with those he left behind. The battle for South Africa’s freedom has been won, and former comrades-in-arms are in prominent positions as mayor, police chief, and pastor. But it quickly becomes clear to Tau that Marseilles is caught in the grip of a vicious new threat — and he must reconstitute the Five Fingers to fight frontier justice. Standing against former allies and new enemies, the re-formed Five Fingers saddle up and ride out, and put their lives at risk to save their beloved Marseilles.

With another Comic-con in the books, movie and TV fans have a lot of great footage to tide them over and feed their hunger for the next few months. The annual pop culture extravaganza has become a midyear beacon for all the best upcoming projects, stirring up fan excitement for new movies, new shows, and new seasons, and this year was no different. Now that the event is in the rearview, it’s time to take a look back at the best of the best.

Movies

Aquaman and Shazam

DC had a major showing this year, debuting two trailers in the hopes of rehabilitating their less than stellar brand. Jason Mamoa’s Aquaman, who was first debuted in last year’s Justice League, finally got its own trailer after months of hype, giving fans a new hope that the DC universe can be turned around. It’s difficult not to be a bit skeptical—after all, we’ve been burned before—but it’s also hard not to get a little excited upon seeing what director James Wan has in store. Aquaman is expected in theaters on December 21.

Next up, the long gestating Shazam was also debuted in San Diego; together with Aquaman, it formed a one-two punch of excitement for the future of the cinematic universe,, which has hopefully learned from the mistakes of its past. Unlike previous DC movies, Shazam looks as though it remembers that comic book movies are supposed to fun. Zachary Levi certainly looks as though he’s having a blast as the titular character, and the trailer bodes well for what’s to come. Shazam is expected on April 5, 2019.

Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald

The second entry in the Harry Potter spin-off/sequel earned some serious buzz over the weekend, even if the casting of Johnny Depp has earned its fair share of scorn. Still, this universe has serious staying power, and Warner Brothers can, no doubt, count on it to make magic at the box office. Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald hits theaters on November 16.

Glass

The surprise reveal that Split was a soft-sequel to Unbreakable immediately had fans clamoring for more from director M. Night Shyamalan’s superhero universe, and now the wait is almost over. Shyamalan brings the two movies together, uniting James MacAvoy’s villainous Beast with Bruce Willis’s David Dunn and Samuel L. Jackson’s Mr. Glass. The trailer presents the suggestion that all three are suffering from a kind of superhero psychosis, implying that none of what we’ve seen in the previous movies is real—or, perhaps, that they’re all coming up against some non-believers. Who knows just how Shyamalan will unravel his twisting journey? We’ll know for sure when Glass hits theaters on January 18, 2019.

Godzilla: King of the Monsters

Holy shit was that Mothra?! Rodan?! KING GHIDORAH?!?! Best. Movie. Ever. Godzilla: King of the Monsters hits theaters on May 31, 2019.

TV

Doctor Who

Fans have been clamoring for a good look at Jodie Whittaker as The Doctor since the teaser trailer last year, and Comic-con delivered. New show runner Chris Chibnall has stated that the upcoming season would be a great place for newcomers to the series to jump in, at the new trailer seems to verify that. Both he and Whittaker have emphasized that the new run won’t be terribly lore heavy, which has always been an impediment for curious fans feeling a little nervous about jumping in. We’ll know for sure when Doctor Who returns to BBC America some time this fall.

Better Call Saul

The fourth season of the Breaking Bad prequel premieres in just two weeks, but Comic-con welcomed the cast and crew to their first ever panel where secrets about the upcoming series, and its tie in to Breaking Bad, were revealed. While we won’t get into spoilers here, the final trailer hyping the new season leaves us wanting more. Good thing the wait is almost over. Better Call Saul returns on August 6.

Nightflyers

After taking over the world with his fantasy epic Game of Thrones, George R.R. Martin turns his eyes to the skies with this sci-fi series. While not much is revealed, we do get a small taste of the kind of intrigue that Martin is known for—betrayal, high stakes, apocalypses. Based on a novella and series of shorts by the author, who gets writing credit for 8 of the 10 episodes, fans are wondering if Martin can strike TV gold a second time. We’ll know for sure when Nightflyers makes its debut on SyFy, though no date has been set.

Disenchantment

Matt Groening’s latest animated series is set to debut on Netflix in just under a month, and the first full trailer looks glorious. Set in a medieval fantasy world, Disenchantment looks decidedly darker than either The Simpsons or Futurama, while still being infused with the kind of irreverent humor the creator is known for. Disenchantment premieres on August 17.

‘Venom’ Releases Underwhelming First Trailer

The union between Marvel Studios and Sony that allowed Spider-Man to re-enter the world of the powerful MCU was a unique opportunity to course correct the flailing Spider-Man franchise and give the character the home it deserved. It was a complicated deal that allowed Marvel to control Spider-Man while giving Sony control over the rest of the Web Slinger’s associated characters, without really answering the question about where they fit into the larger canon. Anyone hoping for answers to that question with the release of the first Venom trailer today were left without any clear answers. Venom, of course, is a wildly popular antagonist of Spider-Man, and rumors have been swirling about whether this movie will take place within the MCU or if it’s a part of a different universe all together. We won’t know for sure until October, but the first trailer certainly leaves a lot to be desired. There’s plenty of Tom Hardy, who plays Eddie Brock/Venom, in the upcoming film, but not much of anything that tells what this film is about. There isn’t even any shot of Venom himself, although we do see a swirling mass of a contained black goo, which fans will immediately recognize. As first looks go, this feels like something that they pushed out due to necessity rather than as something completely ready. Still, Hardy does seem like a solid choice for Eddie Brock. Hopefully we’ll see some actual footage of Venom before the film’s October 5 release date.

‘Tully’ Might Be the Film of the Season

We’re not exactly sure what Tully is on about, but color us intrigued. The new film from writer Diablo Cody (Juno, Evil Dead) and director Jason Reitman (Juno, Up in the Air) seems like a potentially stunning exploration of motherhood in the modern era. What we know is that the film stars Charlize Theron as an exhausted mother of two and Mark Duplass as her distant husband; the two are apparently gifted a nanny (according to IMDb) in the form of the titular Tully (Mackenzie Davis). Beyond that, there’s not much we can glean from this sparse trailer, though with the lineup of talent both behind and in front of the camera it certainly seems like it has the potential for something special. Tully hits theaters on April 20.

‘Jessica Jones’ Season Releases First Full Trailer

The only positive takeaway from last year’s The Defenders was how badly we needed another season of Jessica Jones. Marvel and Netflix’s second MCU series was arguably their best output since the partnership began, and the world has been sorely lacking in Krysten Ritter’s hard drinking, hard fighting, take-no-nonsense private eye. Thankfully, in just one month, we’ll be getting what we wish. The first trailer for the new season find Jessica searching for answers to her mysterious past and the reasons why she developed her superhuman strength in the first place. It appears as though we’ll be taken down another twisting noir adventure that pits the detective against forces she might not be able to handle. If season two is even half as great as its predecessor, we’re going to be in for a fantastic treat. Jessica Jones season 2 premieres March 8 on Netflix.

Brace Yourself; ‘Star Wars’ is Coming

In the wake of the announcement late last year that The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson would be spearheading a new trilogy of Star Wars films, the Star Wars universe seems set to break open even wider. LucasFilm announced yesterday that Game of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss have been tapped to spearhead another series of films outside the purview of Johnson’s series, giving Star Wars fans even more to look forward to in the years following the close of the latest trilogy of films. The existence of two new series of films might feel overwhelming to some, but the franchise has had some astounding luck in recent years, releasing both new chapters of the Skywalker Saga and separate, unrelated films in alternating years. While there’s no word yet on whether the two new series will be released in the same fashion, it does some to be a safe bet. Of course, it does open the question about how much Star Wars is too much. Two entirely new cinematic endeavors does feel a bit like overkill, and given Weiss and Benioff’s success in television, with Game of Thrones being the biggest pop culture sensation since, well, Star Wars, if they wouldn’t be better utilized helming the long promised live action series that has yet to be produced. Still, given that Star Wars has repeatedly proven itself to be a billionaire dollar force to be reckoned with at the box office, and their successful run at turning a little known fantasy series into the hottest property in the world, it’s hard to be cynical about the union of minds at work here. The project, whatever it ultimately ends up becoming, is still years away at this point so, for now, there isn’t much we can do but wait and see.

Meet Cable in New ‘Deadpool 2’ Trailer

Hard to believe it’s been two years since Deadpool first took the world of superhero movies by storm, but here we are, already anticipating the release of Deadpool 2. The gear up for the second chapter in the franchise has been building slowly for a year now, but with the release of a new trailer earlier today, the hypetrain is moving full speed ahead. The marketing for the new movie has taken the same, irreverent tone that first catapulted its predecessor to box office glory, and that trend is continued here. Billed as the first opportunity to see Deadpool (Ryan Reynolds) face off against popular comic book character Cable (Josh Brolin), the bulk of the trailer is simply the titular anti-hero acting out a confrontation between the characters using action figures. That’s pretty on brand, and is sure to be a delight to fans of the first film. Rest assured though, we do get a proper look at Brolin as Cable, which will surely be every bit as satisfying. Deadpool 2 hits theaters on May 18.

Netflix Mines 90s Nostalgia in ‘Everything Sucks’

As heavily as nostalgia plays in today’s pop cultural lexicon, little has yet been done to explore the 90s, the era that, arguable, spawned everything we currently love (or hate) about today. Netflix, no stranger to nostalgia play, aims to fix that with the release of Everything Sucks, a new dramedy set in the 90s. The first trailer gives off a distinct Freaks and Geeks vibe, which isn’t a terrible goal to shoot for when creating a series about the awkwardness of teenage years set amongst a background of nostalgia. Whether or not Everything Sucks can capture the cultural zeitgeist the way other nostalgia driven Netflix shows have managed remains to be seen, but it certainly has the potential to become a new obsession for TV watchers. We’ll know for sure when the series hits the streaming platform on February 16.

“I thought we were in trouble there for a second but it’s fine. We’re fine.”

Knowing what we know about the troubled production of Solo: A Star Wars Story, it’s tempting to call this bit of dialogue from the first full trailer for the movie, released this morning, a bit of meta-commentary on the film itself. Indeed, it might be.

Last summer found Solo, the second in the series of Star Wars anthology films, after 2016’s remarkable Rogue One, suddenly without a director after the abrupt firing of Phil Lord and Christopher Miller by LucasFilm honcho Kathleen Kennedy. With just weeks left in principle shooting, Kennedy, unhappy with the supposedly irreverent tone of Lord and Miller’s work, brought in a ringer. Well, inasmuch as a director like Ron Howard can every be called a ringer.

Since then, the rumor mill has been rampant with suggestions of impending disaster. Reshoots led to recasting certain roles when original actors couldn’t return, key scenes were redone to better match the intended tone of writers Jon and Lawrence Kasdan’s script. The entire project had an air of futility as months went by without so much as a hint of a trailer. Last night changed all that.

The release of the first teaser during last night’s Super Bowl certainly helped quell the feeling that there was no way Solo could make its May 25 release date, and offered us a tiny glimpse of what to expect from next Star Wars movie. That was followed quickly by this morning’s release of a different trailer, which might turn out to be the nail in the coffin for naysayers and detractors.

One of the first things you notice watching the new trailer is just how different the film looks from the Star Wars films we’ve gotten previously. Similar to Rogue One, Solo presents to us a new vision of the galaxy far, far away. Never mind the new actors (though Alden Ehrenreich and Donald Glover do look pretty amazing as Han and Lando, respectively), the look and feel of Solo is unlike anything we’ve seen from the franchise before.

There’s a kind of gritty darkness to the perspective that’s quickly apparent in the latest trailer, far different from the slick and polished world of the main saga. Here we’re taken down the street level, into the dirt of the galaxy; a world of criminals and smugglers just trying to make their names and hit a big score in the process.

A heist movie set in the Star Wars universe is a pretty solid premise, even if we didn’t exactly need a movie set around Han Solo. Still, it’s difficult not to get behind Ehrenreich, who seems to manifest the cocky smugness of a young Harrison Ford in his performance. It’s also not hard to get excited to see Emilia Clarke and Woody Harrelson and find out just where they fit in the larger world.

Though Solo might not be out of the woods yet, the fires of concern have been considerably dampened by the one-two punch of the trailers. At the very least, we can breathe a little easier know that we’ve seen a bit of footage—especially since the footage looks so amazing. Where it’ll ultimately sit among the Star Wars oeuvre we can’t yet know, but at the very least we won’t have to wait long to find out.

Solo: A Star Wars Story opens everyone on May 25.
