Sierra Hull has been wowing audiences with her mandolin playing capabilities since before her age reached the double digits. Today, she’s not only known for her virtuosity and ability to sit in and play with just about anyone; she’s also become a confident and engaging band leader. On Wednesday, November 13th, Hull brought her instrumental prowess, soaring voice, and exceptionally talented bandmates to play at Lincoln, Nebraska’s Bourbon Theater.

Hull, whose current touring band includes drummer Mark Raudabaugh, bassist Erik Coveney, guitarist Shaun Richardson, and fiddle player Avery Merritt, has been releasing albums and singles since she was 13 years old, and has a solid catalog of songs to her credit. Lincoln fans were treated to songs from 2011’s Daybreak (“Best Buy,” “Bombshell”), 2016’s Weighted Mind (“Black River,” “Choices and Changes”), and 2020’s 25 Trips (“How Long,” “Beautifully Out of Place,” “Poison”). Hull has been releasing quite a few singles as of late, and the band played 2024 release “Mad World,” and offered up the live debut the just-released “The First Snowfall” for the encore of the show.

Of course there were a few covers thrown in as well. Hull paid homage to bluegrass forebears with a run through Bill Monroe’s “Old Dangerfield.” A beautiful rendition of the Robert Hunter/Jerry Garcia composition “Black Muddy River” was followed by the rollicking Bela Fleck instrumental “Stomping Grounds.”

Sierra Hull put on a great show filled with great songs, powerful playing, and engaging band interplay, all delivered with broad smiles. The band is playing its final shows of the year on this swing through the midwest before Hull joins the Allman Betts Band as a guest for a series of dates in December.

Soulful blues rock duo Cousin Curtiss opened the show.

Sierra Hull, Bourbon Theatre, Lincoln, Nebraska, 11.13.2024

How Long, Boom, Movement 3, Beautifully Out Of Place, Poison, The Last Minute, What Do You Say?, Bombshell, Truth Be Told, Best Buy, Choices and Changes, Black River, Old Dangerfield, Black Muddy River, Stomping Grounds, Mad World, Out Of My Blues, Lord, That’s a Long Way
Encore: The First Snowfall

Go down a rabbit hole following any of these musicians’ careers and you’ll be met with a who’s who of funk, soul, jazz, and rock artists, from The Meters and Maceo Parker to Steward Copeland and Roger Waters.

The two sets included takes on Moore and Walter compositions, old funk standards and even an instrumental encore of Led Zeppelin’s “Good Times, Bad Times.”

FORM Arcosanti is a unique festival at Arcosanti, an experimental town in Arizona founded by architect Paolo Soleri. The festival blends music, art, and architecture, focusing on sustainability and community. It showcases various artists and musicians, fostering creativity and collaboration in a stunning desert landscape. Despite its limited capacity, the festival has managed to attract an A-list indie lineup in past years that has included Chance the Rapper, Courtney Barnett, Charli XCX, Fleet Foxes, Beach House, Father John Misty and more.

This 2024 edition, which took place October 4-6, featured Beck, St. Vincent, Angel Olsen, Jamie XX, Four Tet, Skrillex, and more. Despite unseasonably hot weather (over 100 during the first week of October), the festival still served its purpose. It was a progressive departure from the oversold mega-corporate festivals on today’s concert landscape.

Arcosanti itself was designed to embody the principles of “arcology,” a term coined by Soleri that combines architecture and ecology. The festival often highlights these themes, encouraging attendees to engage with the environment and explore innovative ways to live sustainably. It’s a celebration of art and music and a platform for discussions on environmental issues and social responsibility.

The Hives, Sweden’s most notorious exports since ABBA, descended upon Boston last night in support of their latest album, The Death of Randy Fitzsimmons. With a rabid fanbase and a reputation for high-energy shows, expectations were sky-high. As usual, the band did not disappoint in the least.

From the opening strains of the album’s lead single, “Bogus Operandi”, it was clear that the Hives were there to take care of business. The crowd erupted into a frenzy as the band tore through their set with a ferocity that left jaws dropped and ears ringing. The iconic duo of Howlin’ Pelle Almqvist and Nicholaus Arson, frontman and guitarist, respectively, were in top form, their onstage chemistry as explosive as ever.

An early highlight of the evening was the performance of the fan-favorite “Main Offender”. The song’s infectious melody and Almqvist’s signature howl had the crowd singing in unison. Mid-set, the band delivered a blistering rendition of “I Hate to Say I Told You So”, a classic that never fails to ignite a mosh pit. The Hives proved their versatility by delving deeper into their catalog with tracks like “Trapdoor Solution” and “Countdown.” These songs showcased the band’s ability to craft catchy tunes while maintaining their signature garage rock sound.

After a brief intermission, the band returned to the stage for a triumphant encore. They wasted no time in pummeling the crowd with a trio of bangers: “Come On!”, “Smoke and Mirrors”, and the official finale, “Tick Tock Boom.” The energy in the room was palpable as the crowd jumped, danced, and sang along with every word.

The Hives’ performance was a masterclass in garage rock. Their raw energy, infectious melodies, and undeniable stage presence left a lasting impression on the audience. It’s clear that they are still at the top of their game and continue to be one of the most exciting bands in the world.

If ever there was a musical artist who blazed his own trail, following his muse down every side road and back alley from which it beckoned, it’s Sturgill Simpson. Being true to his own vision has led to a storied career that’s earned widespread acclaim along with six Grammy nominations and a role in a Martin Scorsese film. He even wrote the theme song to a Bill Murray zombie movie. Of course, there are those who would question the non-conforming artist and the decisions he’s made. For those who’ve wondered why Simpson couldn’t have stayed true to country music, or why he chose to only create five original studio albums under his own name, or why he’d choose to perform under the moniker Johnny Blue Skies, the simplest answer may be found in the name of his current tour.

The “Why Not?” tour rolled into Bend, Oregon’s Hayden Homes Amphitheater on Thursday, September 19th and played to a crowd eager to witness Simpson’s current state of affairs after a few years off the road. There were some familiar faces along for the ride. Long-time collaborator Miles Miller weighed in on a modest drum kit and punched well above his weight. Kevin Black is back, having held down the bass in Simpson’s Sunday Valley days and beyond, before playing for several years in Margo Price’s band. Laur Joamets, who moved from Estonia to Nashville years ago to chase his rock n’ roll dreams, and toured with Simpson as well as Drivin N Cryin, was on guitar. Nashville session musician Robbie Crowell, who’s toured with Midland and Deer Tick, among others, handled keyboard duties, and played some saxophone as well.

With a greeting of “Hello, hippies!” Simpson got started on what would be a 30-song set that extended to nearly three hours and covered material spanning his entire catalog. From the outlaw country of 2013 debut High Top Mountain, to 2014’s breakout Metamodern Sounds in Country Music, 2016’s Grammy-winning A Sailor’s Guide to Earth, 2019’s psychedelic rocker Sound & Fury, and 2021’s concept album The Ballad of Dood and Juanita, all studio albums were represented. There were some choice cover songs included in the set, including The Doors’ “LA Woman” and The Allman Brothers Band “Midnight Rider.” The artist formerly known as Sturgill Simpson even threw down a cover of Prince’s “Purple Rain.”

It was great to see all of these songs mixed together in a live setting, with tunes from Sound & Fury playing nice with tracks from High Top Mountain and The Ballad of Dood and Juanita. Simpson, who had been forced to step away from live performance for a couple of years due to vocal cord injuries, sounded strong and was obviously eager to be back at it. And fans, from first-timers to longtime Simpson stalwarts, soaked in every moment. Whether you call him Sturgill Simpson or Johnny Blue Skies, the man and his band delivered a compelling, expansive live performance.

The 2024 Telluride Blues and Brews festival marked its 30th year on September 13-14. An array of musicians from around the world brought their best game to jam down at the Telluride town park and various juke joints in this box canyon town situated at 8,754′. The late summer weekend brought festival veterans such as Gary Clark Jr. and Ben Harper as well as first-timers such as 15-year-old Taj Farrant and 17-year-old Grace Bowers.

Crisp blue skies and sunshine reigned over the former Colorado mining town for the 30th year of its storied blues festival. Producer Steve Gumble again brought in a unique collection of musicians from across the United States and as far away as Ireland and Australia. Gary Clark Jr told the crowd that he was “blown away” by the lineup of musicians for this year’s festival. Headliner Joe Bonamassa mentioned to the crowd that he was “tickled” just seven years ago when he first played Telluride Blues, and his name could hardly be read in print at the bottom of the poster’s lineup.
