For movie lovers across the country and around the globe, the Super Bowl means one thing and one thing only: brand new trailers. Never mind the heartbreak and glory of the game, the feats of athleticism, or the pomp surrounding the biggest night of television for the year. It’s the trailers we’re after; those first great glimpses of impending blockbusters meant to prime our salivation and kickstart the months of hype trains.
Certainly, we got what we came for. Hopes and dreams may have been made or dashed on the field last night, but far be it from me to remember who scored what or what teams faced off on the gridiron. I’m too busy remembering the first glimpse of Solo, the new look at Avengers: Infinity War, and the mind-blowing reveal about The Cloverfield Paradox (which ended up outshining the movie itself). A movie fan will tell you that’s the real reason to watch the Super Bowl.
While this year may have been somewhat lighter than recent years, what we got was memorable, and more than enough to propel us directly onto the 2018 train. While inevitably more than a few of these movies won’t life up to the hype (*cough* *cough* Jurassic World *cough*) invariably a couple of them will. That’s how it always is for lovers of film. We suffer the disappointment for the chance to delight in the thrill. Maybe, just maybe, one of these films will live up to our expectations. Here’s hoping.
