Sierra Hull Debuts New Material, Covers Grateful Dead and Bela Fleck in Lincoln, NE (SHOW REVIEW/PHOTOS)

Sierra Hull has been wowing audiences with her mandolin playing capabilities since before her age reached the double digits. Today, she’s not only known for her virtuosity and ability to sit in and play with just about anyone; she’s also become a confident and engaging band leader. On Wednesday, November 13th, Hull brought her instrumental prowess, soaring voice, and exceptionally talented bandmates to play at Lincoln, Nebraska’s Bourbon Theater.

Hull, whose current touring band includes drummer Mark Raudabaugh, bassist Erik Coveney, guitarist Shaun Richardson, and fiddle player Avery Merritt, has been releasing albums and singles since she was 13 years old, and has a solid catalog of songs to her credit. Lincoln fans were treated to songs from 2011’s Daybreak (“Best Buy,” “Bombshell”), 2016’s Weighted Mind (“Black River,” “Choices and Changes”), and 2020’s 25 Trips (“How Long,” “Beautifully Out of Place,” “Poison”). Hull has been releasing quite a few singles as of late, and the band played 2024 release “Mad World,” and offered up the live debut the just-released “The First Snowfall” for the encore of the show.

Of course there were a few covers thrown in as well. Hull paid homage to bluegrass forebears with a run through Bill Monroe’s “Old Dangerfield.” A beautiful rendition of the Robert Hunter/Jerry Garcia composition “Black Muddy River” was followed by the rollicking Bela Fleck instrumental “Stomping Grounds.”

Sierra Hull put on a great show filled with great songs, powerful playing, and engaging band interplay, all delivered with broad smiles. The band is playing its final shows of the year on this swing through the midwest before Hull joins the Allman Betts Band as a guest for a series of dates in December.

Soulful blues rock duo Cousin Curtiss opened the show.
